DJs commonly uses voice effects during a performance.
A disc jockey (DJ) employs several tricks during a performance to enhance the music's entertainment value. In addition to turntable tricks, such as mixing and scratching, DJs may embed voice effects into their work. Voice effects identify the DJ, and raise listeners' energy. There are a few common voice effects DJs use on a regular basis.
DJ Drops
A DJ drop is a unique vocal sample of someone saying their name and is used anywhere within a song and can serve a variety of purposes. A DJ drop is used to identify the DJ, and in some instances, the radio station or mix tape the song is currently on. A DJ drop can also be used in a club setting to notify club goers of the DJ playing there tonight. For example, a DJ drop can say "DJ Master is in the mix!" Drops also protect against another DJ stealing your work and claiming it as its own. Typically, DJ drops only last a few seconds, as not to distract listeners from the song.
Hype Effects
DJs can enhance their performances by including vocal hype effects. These effects may include vocal commands for the crowd to dance a certain way, or persuade the audience to cheer and make noise. For example, the vocal commands could say "Everybody get crunk," or "I need all the single ladies to make some noise!" Hype effects are different from DJ drops because drops are used primarily for identification. Hype effects are used specifically to raise the energy level of the crowd. Hype effects can also include popular quotes from familiar movies and television shows.
Audio Effects
Audio effects can be added to any DJ vocal sample to make them sound more appealing. The different effects may turn vocal samples into a digital musical instrument as well. Flanger and phaser audio effects for example, can make your voice sound similar to a guitar. Reverb effects make vocals appear like they were recorded in a large, open room. Delay effects can repeat the vocal sample in a pattern similar to an echo. Adding an audio effect to a vocal sample enhances the sound during a DJ performance.
