Change The Nat Type From Strict To Open For A Netgear Router

Setting a Netgear router NAT to open improves connectivity but reduces security.

Network Address Translation, or NAT, lets you have multiple devices on your local network, each with a different IP address, that access your Internet connection through the public IP address issued by your ISP. Netgear routers have two NAT settings: strict, or secured, which limits the inbound access any device on the local network has with Internet sites and applications, and open, which lessens network security but allows easier access to sites and applications outside the local network.

Instructions

1. Open a browser session. Type "routerlogin.net" or "routerlogin.com" in the address bar. You can also enter the default IP address of the router. Netgear default IPs are "192.168.1.1," "192.168.0.1" or "10.0.0.1."

2. Click "WAN Status" in the Maintenance panel.

3. Click the "Open" radio button next to "NAT Filtering." Click "Apply."
