After your male cat has been neutered, there will be a time of recovery. During this time, you'll need to take some special steps to make sure your cat doesn't tear out his stitches, but he should heal quickly.
Coming Home
Bring your cat home to a quiet house, if possible, or at least a room where he'll have a chance to recover from his vet visit without having to deal with other cats, dogs or children for about 48 hours. Try to keep him from jumping and running for five days after the surgery.
Post-Anesthesia Concerns
Most cats sleep off anesthesia without any trouble. Some vomit a little. Still others exhibit "drunken cat syndrome," staggering as they try to walk. If this happens, place your cat somewhere where he won't stumble into walls or hurt himself. When the anesthetic leaves his system, he should be back to normal.
Staying In
If your cat is an outdoor cat, he'll have to cool his heels in the house for a day. This gives the surgical site time to heal and lets you watch for swelling or excessive licking of the area.
Feeding
Feed your cat about 1/3 what he would normally eat on the day he comes home. The next day, resume feeding normal amounts.
Kitty Litter Changes
Your vet may suggest using a kitty box filled with shredded newspapers or paper towels to keep the surgical area clean.
