Crafts Using Foam

Craft supplies and foam are basic staples for a variety of projects.

Craft foam is an extremely versatile material for quick and easy projects. Foam comes in a wide array of colors, is easily cut with scissors and is inexpensive. You can purchase the foam in sheets or in ready-to-use cut-out shapes. Craft foam is easily attached to other surfaces using glue or double-stick tape. Indulge your creative side using foam, basic craft supplies and your imagination.

Animals

Foam shapes can be put together to form simple animals. Experiment with shapes and see what you create. A large circle can become a face when you add a nose, mouth and eyes. Use basic craft supplies, such as markers, stickers, stick-on eyes and pompoms to add detail to your designs. Attach to craft sticks to make puppets.

Flowers

Flowers come alive when foam shapes are glued together. Use ovals as petals and a star as the center of your blossom. Add a stem and leaves for a complete bloom. These flowers can be mounted on craft sticks and bundled into a bouquet or pushed into floral foam in a flowerpot.

Pencil Toppers

Glue one of your foam creations to a chenille stem. You could use a simple geometric shape and personalize it by writing a name with permanent marker. Attach the stem to the pencil by winding it around several times, ending with the foam piece near the eraser. Put a bunch of these in a small galvanized pail and display on your desk.

Bookmarks

Bookmarks are a quick and easy foam craft. Cut long, thin rectangles from sheets of craft foam. Decorate these with other foam shapes, stickers, markers or other craft items. Use permanent marker to personalize the bookmarks. Glue the entire bookmark to a long piece of wide ribbon for an added touch.

Holiday Items

Craft foam can be used to craft decorations suitable for every holiday. Green foam sheets can easily be cut into tree shapes, pumpkin stems or leaves. Consider the colors you have available. The foam can be used as ornaments, decorations or gift tags. Punch a hole in the top of the shape, add a ribbon and it’s ready to hang in a window or tie on a package.

Pencil Case or Envelope

Sheets of craft foam can be transformed into a pencil case or gift envelope in just a few steps. Cut two pieces of foam the same size. Holding the pieces together, punch holes every one to two inches apart around three sides of the shape. Using colorful yarn, sew the pieces together, leaving the fourth side open, to form a pouch.
