Different 5 String Banjos

Five-string banjos are longer than their four-string counterparts.

The five-string version is one of two major choices you have when selecting a banjo. The five-string banjo allows for more versatile playing because it has one more string than the tenor banjo. The extra string allows for higher notes and suits more genres of music. Five-string banjos range from open-back instruments with a modern electric sound and bluegrass banjos with a vintage sound. Different companies make different five-string models.

Gold Tone OB-500

The OB-500 is a bluegrass five-string banjo with an intricate design running up its maple neck. The bridge is made from a combination of maple and ebony. The OB-500 gets a louder sound thanks to its SMP pickup and has a 26 3/16 inch scale. The OB-500 features GT Masters Planets tuning knobs.

Gibson Earl Scruggs Standard

This Gibson five-string banjo is made to imitate the model that well-known banjo player Earl Scruggs uses. The first, third, fifth, seventh, 10th, 12th, 15th, 17th and 19th frets are all denoted for easier navigation across the fret board. The banjo is nickel plated, constructed of maple and sealed with lacquer for a shiny finish.

Fender FB-54

The Fender FB-54 is an open-back five-string banjo with a scale that measures 27 3/8 inches for plenty of room. The body is made from mahogany and coated to ensure that it is not easily damaged. The fret board is made from rosewood and the rim is created from aluminum.

Washburn B17 Sunburst

The B17 Sunburst is a bluegrass five-string banjo with a brass sound that echoes after each note. The B17 is made from maple and has a sunburst finish to give it a more exotic look than other instruments. Washburn engravings are on the arm rest, headstock and heel.

Rogue Travel / Starter Banjo

The Rogue Starter is a banjo intended for players starting to learn the five-string instrument. An open back, the Starter has a body that is intentionally made to look as if it has been played a lot. The Starter features a vintage head and a satin finish to help reduce the odds of damage.
