Family Day Activities In Southwestern Ontario

Water sports are popular activities in southwest Ontario.


Set between the two Great Lakes of Huron and Ontario, southwest Ontario combines a rich historical past and a unique cultural experience. The area supports many museums, historical interpretations and theaters. The region is a favorite of bird-watchers and lovers of wild spaces. For activities the whole family will enjoy, southwest Ontario has much to offer.


Sarnia-Lambton


Families will find entertainment for young and old, including boating, museums, theaters and parks. Families interested in fishing or sailboating can travel to Lake Huron or St. Clair River marinas and rent boats or launch your own. Pinery Provincial Park provides an extensive trail system for waterfront hikes and bird-watching. In winter, tour the park on the many ski trails available. Mini golf, rock climbing and touring local specialty farms are other popular activities in the area.


Credit Family Explorer


Families can tour southwest Ontario aboard the Credit Vally Explorer. The train operates a three-hour tour through rolling hills and waterways. Beverages and a meal are served along the route. The round-trip rides start in Orangeville. Guests ride in restored rail cars from the 1950s that can be heated or air-conditioned. For a unique event, dinner train tours are available for the entire family.


Chatham-Kent


History education, boating and horseback riding are just a few of the activities available in Chatham-Kent. Museums in Chatham-Kent trace the importance of the underground railroad, the War of 1812 and local manufacturing history. For lovers of live performance, local theater shows include classical music and jazz. Hike or bike on trails in two local provincial parks. Try kite-surfing, wakeboarding or scuba diving on local lakes.


Windsor Essex Pelee Island


Family activities abound in this area of southwestern Ontario. Colasanti's tropical gardens (colasanti.com) offers an arcade, bumper cars and a petting zoo. Children will see lemurs, llamas and even an alligator. Fort Malden recreates the feel of a British garrison during the time when Chief Tecumseh lived in the area. Visitors can tour the fort and watch military demonstrations. Special events at the fort include an ice cream festival, dance competition and an arts and crafts show.
