Connect A Broadband Usb To Share An Internet Connection

A broadband cable modem connected to a computer through a USB port can be connected to a wireless router using a bridge in the Windows XP operating system. In this configuration, the Internet connection available on a modem-connected computer can be shared with other computers using the wireless router. This method is useful when the cable modem and router are always physically connected to a computer.

Instructions> Control Panel >> Network Connections." Right click on the Internet connection connected through the cable modem and go to "Properties >> Advanced tab" and select the "Allow other network users to connect through this computer's Internet connection" check box. Click "OK."

3. An IP address will be set automatically for the Internet connection. You can also assign a static IP address for your Internet connection through the connection properties, for example, "192.168.1.101"

4. Connect a wireless router to the computer and go to its settings wizard through a Web browser, usually by typing the address "http://192.168.1.1" or "http://192.168.0.1" in the address bar.

5. Navigate to the Internet gateway settings. Check the wireless router manufacturer's manual to learn the exact menu item for the Internet gateway settings.

6. Type an IP address of "http://192.168.1.101" for your router. This is the same IP address that was assigned to the Internet connection through cable modem. Save the settings and restart the router. This will create a connection bridge between USB broadband cable modem and the wireless router.

7. Right click on "My Computer" from the desktop on all the other computers that will be using the shared Internet connection and set a common "Workgroup" name for all of them -- for example, "HOME." All the computers can now access the shared Internet connection available through the broadband USB modem.
