There are hundreds of patterns for crocheted afghans.
Crochet has changed from the familiar stereotypes, such as ripple baby blankets in scratchy acrylic yarn and questionable 1970s fashion choices. Afghans are still among the most popular crocheted items, but new patterns are plentiful and yarn choices nearly endless.
Patterns
Beginners can make a crocheted afghan with just a few basic stitches. There are hundreds of patterns online (many are free) as well as in craft magazines, pattern books and craft/yarn retail shops. A good pattern will specify how much yarn is required, what size crochet hook to use and the finished size for your blanket.
Yarn
Yarns come in various weights; if you want a heavy blanket, use worsted or bulky weight yarn. For lighter coverings, such as baby blankets, DK or sport weight is useful. An acrylic or a blended yarn is a good choice for a machine washable afghan. Buy enough skeins to complete the project with a bit extra, from the same dye lot if possible. Dye lots are generally printed on the yarn label.
Crocheting Your Afghan
Follow the pattern directions to crochet your afghan and be sure to keep your tension even. Don't hold your yarn and hook too tightly or too loosely, as this can make your stitches uneven in size and shape. Safety pins or row counters are helpful for keeping track of your progress. When your blanket is done, wash it, stretch the damp fabric back into shape and let it air dry.
