Help the couple remember their journey together by recreating the memories.
The 50th wedding anniversary is called golden with good reason. A love and a bond between two people that has lasted 5 decades deserves to be celebrated and given the highest honor. Unfortunately, in a world economy that sees everyone tightening the purse strings, you may be in search of ideas that don't break the bank, but, at the same time, don't skimp on the fun the couple deserves to enjoy on this day.
Reminisce
Take the couple on a walk down memory lane. An inexpensive way to celebrate their 50 years together is to recreate the milestones in their lives. Set up stations, i.e., tables or designated areas with framed photos dating from their wedding day. Include births of children and grandchildren, pictures and keepsakes from their first home, car and various jobs and other achievements they celebrated together along their journey.
Potluck
Host the anniversary party at the couple's place of worship. Most churches have a sizeable reception hall with kitchen. Invite guests to bring dishes, casseroles and desserts to share. You can even include in the invitation a note that explains that guests with last names beginning with A-F can bring salads, those with initials G-L can bring appetizers, those with initials M-R are responsible for main dishes, and those from S-Z can bring paper plates, cups, plastic ware, and napkins. (Or however you deem it best to divide the attendants). The dessert will be the anniversary cake, purchased or made by you or family member who is helping with the party plans. During the potluck invite various guests to share favorite memories of the happy couple.
Renew Vows
Allow the happy couple to recapture those first moments together by giving them the chance to renew their wedding vows. This can take place in a park, back yard, or church. Decorations can be purchased or made inexpensively. Gold and white helium balloons can be picked up at the local dollar store along with the gold foil weight that will anchor the balloons at entrances, on either side of the pulpit, or in corners. Lightweight fabric of tulle can cost less than $1 per yard and tied into bows around chairs or on the end of pews. Enlist grandchildren or family friends to provide free music that can range from a few songs and the work of a pianist or a full fledged quartet that includes a violinist, cello player, flutist, and French horn musician. Afterward inexpensive appetizers and the wedding cake will suffice at the reception/celebration.
