History
In 1791, Italian physician Luigi Galvani began experimenting with electric currents on frog legs. He recorded his findings, which led scientists to discover the full potential of these currents. Some of the uses include biofeedback, lie detectors, balance control and cellulite treatment. The currents became known as Galvanic currents, named after Luigi.

How It Works
Whether you receive galvanic treatments at home or in a spa, the process remains the same. A device which emits electric currents is placed on the cellulite-ridden portions of your skin. The currents remove clogging liquids so that the fat, which is trapped under the skin, can move along freely. This will increase blood flow in the area. Toxins are also removed with galvanic treatments. When blood flow increases, cellulite is broken down, and the dimpled skin returns to its normal state.
Why Exercise Doesn't Work
Cellulite is caused by fat cells that are trapped under the skin's surface. When exercising, you burn the fat that lies close to the bones, not the fat cells that cause cellulite. This is the dilemma that plagues those who have cellulite.

There are currently two ways to receive cellulite treatments that use galvanic currents. Some spas offer galvanic treatment sessions. More recently, a handheld device has been marketed that emits galvanic currents. It is small and made to use at home. The device costs around $300.
