Eye Lift Procedures

Eye lift procedures, also known as blepharoplasty, are one of the most common cosmetic procedures done to both men and women. It helps an individual look more alert and youthful, as well as improving the shape of the upper and lower eyelids due to aging. Eye lift procedures correct bags under the eye, sagging skin in the upper and lower eyelids, excess fat in the eye area and fine lines or wrinkles.

Consultation

A consultation with the cosmetic surgeon is important to go over any questions or concerns you may have about eye lift procedures. The surgeon will ask you questions about lifestyle, health and what you expect out of an eye lift procedure.

Be prepared to share with the surgeon any information about possible medications, uses of vitamins or whether you smoke. These questions will help the surgeon determine the best plan during the eye lift procedure. They will also share with you what will happen during the procedure and give information on the anesthesia that will be used.

Anesthesia

During the eye lift procedure, anesthesia will be given to provide comfort during the surgery. During the consultation, you and the surgeon will decide whether it will be a general anesthesia or intravenous sedation.

Correction

The incisions on the eyelid during the procedure are made on inconspicuous areas, usually in the fold. Sagging eyelids may get an incision in the crease of the upper eyelid that will help the surgeon tighten the skin or remove excess fat or underlying muscle.

For lower eyelid procedures, an incision is made directly under the lower lash line, where excess fat, skin or tissue may be removed to lift the eye area or reduce a baggy appearance.

Closing incisions

Once the surgeon has tightened the eyelid or removed excess fat, she can begin to close the incisions. There are three different options for closing incisions: surgical tape, absorbable sutures and skin adhesive. The surgeon will determine the best option based on your needs, and which may allow the fastest healing.

Results

A few days after an eye lift procedure, you may experience swelling and bruising. These signs will generally fade away within a week and begin to reveal a more defined eyelid. An ointment should be applied to the eyes along with cold compresses to reduce swelling, in addition to any medication the surgeon prescribes to reduce infection or irritation.

If the surgeon used removable sutures, it will be necessary to make a follow-up appointment to have them removed. To avoid scar discoloration, be sure to wear dark sunglasses and avoid the sun until healing is complete.
