The good life only comes if you work at it.
Everyone wants "the good life," but no one can seem to agree on what it is or get it. However, one could say that the essentials for a happy existence involve enjoying the majority of what you do and keeping a balance between different areas of your life. That can be difficult when various areas are a constant source of stress, or bleed over into one another. But never fear -- by understanding the essentials, you will take the first step in finding ways to get them.
Health
Good health, or at least having chronic health issues under control, is a key essential for a better life. Make sure to get the proper nutrition and hydration each day -- take a vitamin supplement if you must. Do a combination of cardiovascular and strength training exercises -- whatever type your age and condition allows. Do other physical activities that you enjoy, to increase the chances you will continue with them. Get at least 7-9 hours of quality sleep each night.
Work
Work is another activity you need for a better life -- and not just because it brings in income. You need work that, if not always enjoyable, is at least challenging, meaningful, and rewarding. Take steps today to make that happen. Look for more interesting projects in your company, and figure out get them. Polish your resume and go job hunting if your current position is unsatisfying. You may even want to start your own business if that is your dream.
Relationships
Relationships are a crucial factor in the quality of a person's life. You need a combination of thriving relationships with friends, family, and (optionally) romantic partners. Make more time to spend with your family and friends, even if it's just e-mailing or talking on the phone. Go to them with your problems, and let them know you are there to hear theirs. If you're looking for romance, join a local singles club, online dating site or other arena to meet potential partners.
Recreation
Finally, pursuing enjoyable recreation activities will increase your quality of life as well. Make time for hobbies you enjoy -- preferably those that capitalize on your talents and skills. Maintain some semblance of work-life balance. Physically remove yourself from your ordinary environment to take short vacations once in a while. If you can't afford to go away for a long time, at least take the occasional day trip.
