About Laptop Display Vertical Lines

Vertical lines on a laptop's display may be caused by one or more malfunctioning components.

Vertical lines on a laptop's display may be caused by a number of issues. Rectifying the problem entails diagnosing the problem correctly and replacing the malfunctioning component.

Motherboard and Video Chipset

You can eliminate or confirm the motherboard or video chipset as being the source of the problem by connecting the laptop to a projector. If the external display is normal and does not display vertical lines, it means the motherboard and video chipset are functioning normally. If the projector has the same problem, you may have to replace the video card.

Faulty Cabling

You may be able to rid the screen of vertical lines by checking the laptop's video cable. This entails dismantling the display assembly to access the video cable that connects the screen to the motherboard. Wiggle the cable around, or replace the cable and check the display. If this doesn't help, you may have to replace the screen itself.

Screen

In most cases, vertical lines on a laptop's screen are caused by the screen itself. If the lines seem to get wider or narrower, or change color when you apply pressure from the back of the panel, the problem is probably caused by the laptop's LCD screen and may have to be replaced.
