Bowel Cleansing With Magnesium Citrate

Colon cleansing is required just before an individual has a CTC scan. A CTC scan is often used to look for developing polyps and/or cancer. But if the colon is not properly cleansed prior to diagnostic testing, the test's sensitivity is significantly diminished. You might also cleanse the colon to better your health, diminish fatigue and detoxify your body. Magnesium citrate is an ingredient that might be in the colon cleanser you choose.

Before the Cleansing

You will be required to fast for a period of 24 hours before you have a bowel cleansing with magnesium citrate. Your fasting period will allow you to have clear liquids only and no solid foods whatsoever. You will also be provided with a laxative so that the evacuation of your bowels will be easier and more expedient. The laxative in question is often magnesium citrate in the form of a powder.

The Magnesium Citrate Bowel Cleansing

Magnesium citrate is occasionally the preferred laxative before a CTC scan, especially for those who might have sodium sensitivities or electrolyte imbalances. Magnesium citrate is used as a bowel-cleansing agent because it contains osmotic agents and ions that are inorganic, which forces fluids to move into the bowel lumen. This later action then stimulates a process known as peristalsis, which helps to empty out your colon. Magnesium citrate is sometimes identified as a "saline laxative." The magnesium citrate stops reabsorption of fluids and encourages the expulsion of anything in the colon area.

Powdered magnesium citrate must be mixed with eight ounces of water. If the magnesium citrate is offered to you in a premixed form, all you have to do is consume the liquid inside the bottle. You will need to consume the beverage three to four hours before your CTC scan is scheduled, and you will also want to continue to drink water until your CTC scan so you can remain fully hydrated.

At-Home Magnesium Citrate Colon Cleansers

There are several products that can be used at home that offer the same colon-cleansing benefits as the medications supplied by a doctor before a CTC scan. You can select products like Dulcolax®, Citrate of Magnesia or Fleet Prep Kits, which can be used at home so that you can cleanse out any bowel accumulations in the colon. You will need to follow the instructions offered on the packaging for the best results.

It is recommended that you consult with a doctor before using magnesium citrate home products for cleansing the colon. However, some people experience side effects from the use of such products, including dizziness, diarrhea and abdominal pain. The products should not be used if you have issues with your kidneys or if you have cardiovascular disease. The product also should not be used by pregnant or nursing women or by people who suspect that they have a bowel obstruction.
