Clean Refrigerator Drain Ports

Clean refrigerator drain ports to prevent pools of water.

People trust refrigerators to keep their food cold, sanitary and good for consumption. However, if you don't perform basic cleaning tasks regularly, you could expose your fridge to dirty conditions and jeopardize the safety of your food. One easily overlooked maintenance task is cleaning the refrigerator's drain ports. This hole at the bottom of the refrigerator drains condensation and spilled liquids out of the compartment and into the drain pan underneath the fridge. Over time, these drains can become dirty and clogged with residue, which can cause water pools and leaks. Cleaning the ports at least once per year keeps the refrigerator draining correctly. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Unplug the refrigerator from its electrical outlet.

2. Clear the area around the drain port, which is located at the bottom of the fridge. Remove the vegetable crisper tray if needed.

3. Snake a length of 1/4-inch diameter flexible tubing into the drain port to loosen any clogs or debris stuck to the sides of the tube. Push until you hit the drain pan underneath and feel its hard resistance.

4. Stir 1 tbsp. of bleach into 2 cups of cold water. Suck the mixture into a turkey baster.

5. Force the bleach water into the drain port using the turkey baster. If you want, inject a baster of the bleach water into the drain port found at the bottom-rear of the freezer as well.
