Hair Transplant Preoperative Instructions

Any surgery, even when it's cosmetic, is a big deal for your body. Follow all pre-operative instructions prior to hair transplant surgery, and you'll increase your chances of achieving a beautiful, healthy head of hair and a simple, complication-free procedure.

Pre-Operative Medications and Bloodwork

Prior to any surgery, you'll be asked by your physician to provide full disclosure on any medications you're taking or have taken recently. It's likely you will have to suspend any hair treatments, like Rogaine, if you've been using them. You may have to stop taking other medicines or using topical treatments on your hair. It may also be necessary to discontinue the use of some vitamins and aspirin prior to surgery; consult with your physician to find out.

Before hair transplant surgery, it may be necessary to take a course of drugs. Lotions like Minoxidil and antibiotics such as Augmentin may be prescribed one to two weeks in advance of surgery. Blood is often obtained before surgical procedures, even cosmetic surgeries. This testing may occur a week to a few days before the actual surgery.

Preparing Your Hair for Transplant Surgery

One to two weeks before your hair transplant surgery, it's common for patients to be asked not to cut or trim their hair. You'll probably also be asked to perform scalp-massaging and stretching exercises that loosen up the skin. When this is the case, you'll be given thorough instructions about which techniques to use.

The morning of the surgery, generally pre-operative patients are asked to shampoo and dry their hair, leaving it free of styling gels and other products. Often, you'll be asked to use an antiseptic shampoo (Betadine and Hibitane scrubs are common).

What to Eat, Drink and Wear Before Hair Transplant Surgery

Most physicians will recommend no smoking or alcohol consumption prior to hair transplant surgery. The time period could range from 24 hours before surgery to three full weeks before the date of your procedure; instructions vary by facility.

Some pre-operative instructions may tell you that you cannot drink tea or coffee the morning of your surgery as well. This is done to avoid any possible chemical reactions with the anesthetics you will receive. Most facilities will allow you to eat the morning of your surgery, but some may not. It's important to check the pre-operative instructions you will be given by your physician prior to your hair transplant procedure.

Wear loose, comfortable clothing that does not have to be pulled up over your head to be taken off. Button-down shirts are usually recommended for patients undergoing hair transplant surgery. Some facilities will also ask that you wear no hats, caps or scarves that will cover your head.
