Avoid Skin Problems After Gastric Bypass

Gastric bypass is a surgery that induces weight loss by limiting the amount of food that can be eaten. It's generally only performed on those that are considered medically obese. To be considered medically obese, you must have a BMI of 40 or more. Gastric bypass is the most common bariatric surgery performed in the United States. The majority of people experience rapid weight loss within the first six months. As is often the case with quick weight loss, there is a risk of loose skin. There is no way to know ahead of time whether or not you will have substantial amounts of loose skin. Per Dr. Gregory Caputy, the age of the person is a factor. 1. Lift weights. While this will not completely prevent skin from becoming loose, it will assist in building up the muscle underneath. Also, due to rapid weight loss, the body may deplete muscle stores. Weight training may be done at the gym or at home. To begin, start weight training one to two days per week. Make sure that you allow at least one rest day between sessions.


2. Keep your body hydrated. Skin is the largest organ in the body. Rapid weight loss may result in dehydration. If the skin is dehydrated, it will not be able to rebound well. To maintain proper hydration, drink a minimum of eight glasses of water per day. Caffeine-free herbal tea may be counted in your daily water intake.


3. Supplement your diet. Specific vitamins and minerals may be beneficial in maintaining and restoring skin elasticity. Zinc is a mineral that helps to maintain cells in skin. Vitamin C and vitamin E may also have a positive impact on skin. Consult a health care professional for the proper dosage information.


4. Apply aloe vera juice to your skin. Aloe vera assists in regenerating the skin as well as preventing and treating stretch marks. Aloe vera juice can be purchased at most health food stores.


5. Try dry skin brushing. This involves using a large body brush on dry skin and brushing it in circles from head to toe. This treatment is said to tighten the skin and improve circulation. Practice dry skin brushing daily, especially right after the gastric bypass and throughout weight loss.
