Foam Plate Crafts

You have to make a special trip to the craft store for certain crafts, such as scrapbooking, but for other crafts, especially children's crafts, you can use several different items that you already have around the house to make fun creations. Foam plates are one such household item that you can use to make easy and simple craft projects. Just make sure there is an adult to do all the cutting.

Easter Basket

You will need two foam plates for this project. Cut one foam plate in half. Cut the inside of the top half of the other plate out; this will leave you with half of the plate with only a rim and the other half of the plate normal. The half of the second plate that only has a rim will function as the handle of your Easter basket. Paint both sides of both plates brown and let them dry. Glue the half plate to the normal half of the other plate, along the rim of the plates. You should now have very slim Easter basket shape. Cut egg shapes out of construction paper of several colors. Use markers or crayons to draw designs on your paper eggs before putting them in your foam plate Easter basket. You can also fill your Easter basket with Easter grass.

Winter Wreath

Cut out the inside part of your plate, leaving the rim of the plate intact. Trace your hand several times onto pieces of green construction paper. You should have at least 20 hand tracings; the more you make the fuller your winter wreath will be. Cut out all of the hand tracings and glue them onto the foam plate rim so that they overlap. The hand tracings should follow the circular direction of the plate rim. You want the palm of the hand tracing to be the part that you glue down and the fingers of the tracing to be free. So, you should have fingers over the top of palms since you are overlapping the pieces. Cut small circles, about the size of a penny, from red construction paper and glue them randomly onto your winter wreath. Finally, make a big bow with thick red ribbon to place at the top of your wreath.

Fish

Take your foam plate and cut out a wedge that is about 2 inches wide at the rim of the plate and extends all the way into the center of the plate. Color the main part of the plate as the body of your fish, adding at eye above the wedge mouth that you cut out of the plate. Color the wedge piece that you cut from your plate as the tail of the fish. Attach the wedge piece to the back of your foam plate fish so that the pointy end of the wedge is attached to the body of the fish and the wide end of the wedge extends straight out. You can use sequins, glitter or rhinestones to make your fish sparkle and craft eyes to make it more life-like.
