Record My S90 Xs Through The Apogee Duet

The Apogee Duet is an Apple OS X-exclusive audio interface. GarageBand and Logic, Apple's premier audio and MIDI recording applications, are both programmed to work automatically with the Duet, which comes with a breakout cable offering both MIDI and audio inputs. To play and record the audio from a hardware synthesizer such as the Yamaha S90 XS, it must be connected to an available audio input connector on the Duet's breakout cable.

Instructions

1. Turn off the S90 XS. Making connections between devices while turned on should almost always be avoided. The Duet will be on as long as it is connected to your computer via FireWire or USB. It is safe to leave it connected to the computer while making connections to other devices.

2. Plug one end of a 1/4" cable into the "L/MONO" jack on the back of the S90 XS. You will find the "L/MONO" port on the right end of the back panel, in the section labeled "OUTPUT."

3. Plug the other end of the cable into an available mic/instrument connector on the Duet's breakout cable.

4. Connect the Duet's breakout cable to its connection port on the upper end of the Duet.

5. Turn the S90 XS on.

6. Open your recording application of choice, such as GarageBand or Logic. Consult the application's documentation for information about enabling the Duet's input within the program. In the case of GarageBand, it will be recognized and implemented automatically. Create a new track and select the Duet as input.

7. Play the S90 XS. You will hear it play back through the recording application. Click the application's "Record" button to begin recording.
