HCG is a hormone that is most commonly used to induce ovulation in a women trying to become pregnant. The treatment costs can become quite pricey though.


What is HCG?


Human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG) is a hormone that supports the normal development of an egg in a woman's ovary, and stimulates the release of the egg during ovulation. If you are having difficulty conceiving a child, it could be a problem with your hCG levels.


Uses


HCG is used to cause ovulation and to treat infertility in women. Most women will take hCG if hormone levels become low during pregnancy. HCG is also used to increase sperm count in men and in young boys when their testicles have not dropped down into the scrotum normally.


Take HCG


HCG is given through an injection. This is given a few days before ovulation occurs. It takes an average of 36 hours for it to start working.


Cost


HCG tends to be a more expensive fertility drug. Ampules cost between $35 and $75 each, and each injection may require upwards of six ampules at one time. This is up to the doctor. Some insurance plans may cover the cost of hCG.


Success


HCG is a very successful in helping women to ovulate; 90 percent of women who take it begin to ovulate.
